When shopping for products that contain CBD and/or other cannabinoids, it can be difficult to know what to look for. In fact, many people aren’t aware that there are different forms of hemp oil extracts and they do not all perform similarly.
There are three terms you’re likely going to see when browsing products: full spectrum, broad spectrum, or CBD Isolate. While you may have quickly browsed past these terms, it’s important to know the difference to ensure you are getting the best quality product possible.
We’ll begin by discussing the basics of cannabinoids.
What are Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis plants that interact with receptors in one of the most important systems of the body, the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The Endocannabinoid System is responsible for maintaining balance in the body. When the body is chronically stressed and lacks recovery, dysfunction occurs in the ECS manifesting as a myriad of different symptoms including chronic pain, inflammation, digestive distress, anxiety and insomnia.
Our bodies produce natural cannabinoids when we are living a healthy and balanced lifestyle, however, with a lack of emphasis on maintaining balance in our mind and body, we can become subject to the consequences of chronic stress and our bodies don’t produce the natural cannabinoids necessary to create balance.
Cannabinoids found in cannabis interact with our body’s ECS directly, providing balance to areas that may be experiencing chronic pain and inflammation. With a majority of receptors found throughout the digestive tract, oral cannabis consumption is an extremely efficient way off promoting bodyside therapeutic effects.
The most commonly mentioned cannabinoids in cannabis are THC and CBD. Depending on the type of cannabis plant you are extracting oil from, cannabis will contain mostly one or the other, while also containing lower concentrations of other cannabinoids that also have therapeutic effects on the body.
THC is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. Although it does provide unique therapeutic effects for medical patients, it’s psychoactive effect can cause anxiety or impairment in daily tasks depending on one’s experience and tolerance. An abundance of THC are found in marijuana type cannabis plants.
CBD is non-psychoactive, so you do not experience any type of high. CBD has been shown to help with pain, inflammation and insomnia. An abundance of CBD are found in certain strains of hemp type cannabis plants. In December 2018, the US Farm Bill made it legal to grow and cultivate industrial hemp with THC levels under .3 percent. This will ensure that there isn’t close to enough THC content to make you feel any type of “high”.
In addition to THC and CBD, there are hundreds of other minor cannabinoids and terpenes present in cannabis that also have therapeutic benefits and aren’t psychoactive. These hundreds of compounds are found in trace amounts compared to THC and CBD but research has shown that they all work together to produce more of a therapeutic benefit than any isolated compound. Therefore, it is more effective to take either THC or CBD with the other cannabinoids and terpenes, than it is to take either one isolated. This is known in the industry as “The Entourage Effect”.
Types of Cannabis Oil Supplements
Back to our three types of CBD supplements: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD Isolate.
Full Spectrum supplements are now considered to be supplements that contain THC and all other cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. Most Full Spectrum supplements are not federally legal because they contain more than .3 percent of THC, therefore, it is difficult to purchase these types of products unless you live in a state that has legalized the recreational use of marijuana.
Broad Spectrum products contain all cannabinoids present in the hemp plant, except THC. Broad spectrum products are widely available and are considered superior hemp based products because they take advantage of the superior therapeutic effect of all cannabinoids working together, while maintaining federal legality.
CBD Isolate products only contain the cannabinoid CBD. These products still work therapeutically, however, research has shown that CBD isolate products have an inferior effect because the whole is greater than the sum it it’s parts when it comes to cannabis.
Broad Spectrum Benefits
In terms of quality and lowering your risk of consuming the psychoactive compound THC, Broad Spectrum products are a superior option because they utilize the therapeutic effects of all cannabinoids found in cannabis, while ensuring that you won’t have to worry about THC. Broad spectrum oils have also been shown to have a greater effect per dosage than CBD isolate.
